    Forever Jung...
    Iiinteresting.

Both my main fanfic WIPs at the moment play with folklore regarding animal shapeshifters as Otherworldly lovers. And both, at least in parts, have much to do with the element of water.

I think I need to find myself some time to go swimming soon; it's been waayyy too long. And not in concrete and chlorine either.

    Isn't it strange....
the way there are things that you know in your bones are true, and yet you forget them because your monkey-mind is kind of dumb, and every time you remember them, you think you've learned something? Ha!

One thing I know is that, for a writer, the best treatment for all sorts of malaises of the mind is just to write. Not angst about writing, not putter around not-writing, not even to write about writing. Just to write. Whatever it is.

And I also know that for a long intimidating WIP, the important thing is just to look at it every day. Add a little. Change a little. Just a few hundred words. Just one scene. Fix a little wording that's wonky. Move into it. Make it home. Don't carry it around like something in a sealed jewel box that you're afraid to look at.

Last night I typed up and tweaked a scene of dialogue that I handwrote in a moleskine notebook on an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in April of 2006. A 20-baht note fell out of the pages. (no, that's not a lot of money.) You can see where my handwriting is wobbly from the train's motion. But the scene is sort of solid and makes me smile.

This one's for the Good Omens folks!
Another GJ and IJ-exclusive post...this is a scene from a long (three or four parts?) WIP, working title "Morning In the Bowl of Night." It's an historical Aziraphale/Crowley romance/drama/comedy in the vein of "Breathless Mouths May Summon" and "The Phoenix and the Turtle" and takes place between those two chronologically.

I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this one, but I'm having fun. The challenge I set for myself was to write them outside of Western Europe and the Judeo-Christian milieu entirely--it meanders all over the Silk Road and then well off the beaten track and off into the Indochinese jungles, bookended by the bloodthirsty reigns of Genghis Khan and Temur ("the Lame," though not to his face), and if I feel like a fish out of water, that's OK, so do they.

In this bit, which only two other people have ever seen, Crowley's feeling very at home in the water--though not as a fish--and being fairly PG-13 all by himself.

He appreciated that in an element )

is also trying to shake loose a minor block--snark and speculations welcomed. :)

    Keeping a Promise!
I said I would do this, so here's the first of my Non-LJ posts. Cross-posted to GJ.

One thing Deathly Hallows did, I think, I hope, is break my HP semi-block. For some reason, I lost a lot of the urge to write HP fic after OotP. I still enjoyed reading it. I still got bunnies from time to time, but the compulsion was gone. I think there were a couple of reasons for this: (1) It's such a huge fandom, even if I didn't write, there was never a shortage of good things to read. I didn't feel necessary. (2) I realize I don't cope all that well with being Jossed. I don't get angry or anything, I just feel uncomfortable about settling into a long story or series with that factor. I write better in closed canons; I just feel freer. Now that the HP series is complete, I feel that all AU points of departure are equal now, and maybe someone (even me!) will take interest in the continuation of a series mostly written in 2002 and 2003.

So here's an excerpt from the unfinished, yet untitled, but BACK-in-progress 6th story in The Ravenous Series. Fairly G-rated, this part. Dumbledore, Animagus!Snape, and an OC (or is he?). Oh, and lots of cats. They'll be very relevant.

    Huginn or Muninn? )

    Enjoy!

    Chicken - head = me
Gack! I owe so many emails and replies. I suggested a project and I have no time for it! Work! Work!

In good busy-ness news, though, [info]signifier is here on his book tour. Most of the weekend at Wizard World in Rosemont, but he was at the Aerie last night. He still gives the world's best neck rubs and Burning Man anecdotes.

In the absence of anything meaningful from me (yet!) here's a rec. What Really Happened 2.0, or How Aziraphale Learned to Stop Worrying and Start Loving the Porn, by [info]violet_quill. Search your feelings, Good Omens fen. You know it to be true.
